Acupuncture originated in China and dates back more than 2000 years, so it is often referred to as the original medicine. Acupuncture has become a very popular form of treatment in the west and over the years has been backed by evidence based research.

How does Acupuncture work? The common question on everyone’s lips!

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. Acupuncture does this by the insertion of hair fine needles at very precise acupuncture points along channels in the body. This helps the body release endorphins and other chemicals to stimulate the bodies natural healing response and rebalance hormones. Acupuncture also relaxes the muscles and reduces inflammation in the body. It can be used as a stand alone treatment or can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine.

Acupuncture is a safe, gentle and relaxing form of treatment, which can benefit people of all ages, helping with specific conditions or symptoms and giving people the benefit of the feeling of relaxation and wellbeing.

Bryony will look at your condition and symptoms with a unique approach with a number of diagnostic methods. This along with a full history allows Bryony to get a complete picture to treat the root cause and deeper patterns of disharmony underlying the specific symptoms. She will put together a personal treatment plan and select the acupuncture points accordingly.

Acupuncture also includes other techniques such as cupping, moxibustion and acupressure. These may be used as part of the treatment depending what you are having treatment for.

What happens during treatment:

The initial consultation will last up to an hour and a half. A full medical history will be taken and you will be asked about your health, physically and emotionally. Your tongue will be looked at and your pulse will be taken, this will give Bryony an indication of what is going on internally. If you are seeking treatment for a physical and muscular injury a brief physical examination may be done. On subsequent treatments there will be a brief consultation to ask about any improvements and any new symptoms you may want to concentrate on.

After the consultation you will  have the opportunity to ask questions before the treatment goes ahead. You may need to remove items of clothing before the treatment commences depending on the clothing you are wearing and where the acupuncture points are required. It is advisable if possible to come in looser fitting clothing so these can be rolled up or moved out of the way, however towels are provided for privacy and you will be left to get undressed in private. Treatment will take place on an adjustable couch for ease of getting on and off and fine needles are inserted into the body at specific acupuncture points. They are retained for about 20 minutes whilst you relax. The needles are then removed and the treatment is concluded.

Often a course of treatment is recommended. The length of this course will depend on your condition and how your body responds. Subsequent treatments usually last 45 minutes to an hour.

I am a member of the AAC, Association of Acupuncture Clinicians. Many insurance companies now cover acupuncture treatment and you can claim up to half of the treatment costs back depending on your provider. Includes a full history and Acupuncture treatment. Approx 1 hour 15 minutes.

Follow up Acupuncture treatment – £55.00

Approx 45 minutes – 1 hour.

Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture Prices

Facial cosmetic acupuncture treatment – £80.00

Approx 1 hour 30 minutes.

Please note: Facial cosmetic acupuncture is priced higher than traditional acupuncture, this is due to a longer treatment time and having to use a lot more needles. Bryony will be needling both constitutional points on the body as well as the face, with the added use of intradermal needles in the lines and wrinkles.

Cupping Therapy Prices

Cupping Therapy (1 hour) – £50.00

Cupping therapy massage for pain specific complaints or muscle relaxation.

Cupping Therapy (30 min) + Acupuncture – £60.00

My story

Bryony graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture from the Northern College of Acupuncture (NCA), in York, where she studied for 3 years. The NCA and its courses are accredited by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board (BAAB).

Bryony has lived in Harrogate for over 29 years and loves working in her local community.  Bryony’s caring nature and instinct in wanting to help people lead her to seeking a career where she could do just that. Acupuncture is a profession that has always fascinated Bryony and after having treatment for many years herself, she made the decision to undertake training at the NCA and a career as an Acupuncturist.

Bryony is registered with the Harrogate Borough Council as an approved Acupuncturist. She is also a member of the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians (AAC). Patients with health care insurance plans can claim for treatment, please check with your provider.

Bryony has additional training in Fertility for Natural Conception and, Assisted conception and IVF. She has also trained in Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture which she completed with Cosmetic Acupuncture trainer Paul Adkins, and is now a recommended cosmetic acupuncturist for Yorkshire and Humber.

Why have acupuncture?

Acupuncture aims to treat not only symptoms but more importantly the causes. For example, in this way it will look at the cause of a headache rather than just providing pain relief in order to cure the problem and suppress the symptoms. Acupuncture can treat conditions which are not easily explained in western medicine. Approaching a condition from this different Eastern perspective can often find other solutions to the problem that western medicine cannot. Acupuncture can also provide treatment without the side effects that many drugs can induce.

How does acupuncture work?

The philosophy behind the treatment is that energy lines or meridians circulate around the body. These meridians contain our energy flow or “qi”. It is when this qi is impaired through the body that imbalance and illness occurs. With the insertion of fine needles at various points on the meridian, the energy can be moved or redirected to where it is needed most. In this way the body’s balance can be restored and the illness resolved.

The flow of energy can be disrupted in many ways; emotional upset, physical trauma, poor diet or overwork are all common examples. By examining this underlying cause and how it has affected the body, the most appropriate treatment for the patient can be selected. Treating the patient as an individual is at the core of the acupuncture treatment and its this that helps allow the body to rebalance itself.

Does acupuncture work?

Quite simply yes! As the main form of treatment in the East for thousands of years, it could not have continued for so long if it did not work.

There is much evidence that demonstrates that effectiveness of acupuncture in treating certain conditions, eg back pain, asthma, sinusitis (the list goes on). The World Health Organisation now states that acupuncture is effective for a variety of conditions.

The way that acupuncture treats the person rather than just the symptom is key in it’s effectiveness.

Does Acupucture hurt?

No, not usually. Acupuncture needles are hair thin and are designed specifically to slide skilfully past tissues rather than puncture them. The sensation felt is often described as a tingling or dull ache around the area. Patients often report feeling relaxed or invigorated during and after treatment. Acupuncture should not be a painful or unpleasant experience.

How long will it take?

The first treatment will normally be up to an hour and a half as a full history is taken. This includes all aspects of your health and family history. There will also be an examination of the tongue and pulse, which give indications of how the energy is flowing internally.

Subsequent sessions will be shorter, approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Will I need to get undressed?

The majority of common acupuncture points are below the elbow or below the knee. Therefore loose clothing is advisable and most treatments do not require the removal of clothing. However it may often be necessary to get to an affected area eg. in the case of back pain.

How many sessions will I need?

As each person and their condition is unique, the length of treatment differs. Change is usually felt after four treatments which are normally weekly at first. Sometimes treatment is dramatic and only one or two treatments are required while for other patients, results are more subtle and may take several months.

Is it safe?

All British Acupuncture Council Members observe a strict code of practice which governs their standard of care and level of conduct. They must have been trained for at least three years in Traditional Acupuncture and western medicine. All needles used are sterile and disposable. Patients receiving acupuncture are still eligible to donate blood.

How does cosmetic acupuncture differ to regular acupuncture?

A regular acupuncture session treats your whole health picture by addressing the immediate symptoms and the underlying energetic imbalance. A cosmetic acupuncture session incorporates both a regular acupuncture treatment and includes additional facial acupuncture to deliver cosmetic benefits. Therefore cosmetic acupuncture treatment sessions usually take longer than regular acupuncture sessions.

Will my insurance pay for acupuncture?

Many insurance companies now cover acupuncture treatment by either self-referral or referral from your GP or specialist. If uncertain, please check with your insurer.
